I have this tendency to buy books or request books that I think I want to read only to find out that maybe I’m not so sure anymore. Sometimes the hype gets to me, sometimes the negative reviews do, sometimes my tastes just change. Here are the top ten books sitting on my shelves that I really can’t decide whether or not I want to read them.
1. The Fault In Our Stars by John Green – Please don’t shoot me. I know I should have already read this but the hype really got to me. I will, however, have to read it soon since it’s required for my YA Lit class this semester.
2. Unravel Me & Ignite Me (Shatter Me #2 & #3) by Tahereh Mafi – I read Shatter Me back before it ever came out but I still have not read the second or third book. I was not a fan of Warner in the first book and I hate love triangles so I’m really scared to find out where Tahereh Mafi takes things in these books.
3. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas – I have the first three books in this series on my shelf but I’m terrified to pick them up. First off because they have become so popular, I don’t want to end up hating them. Secondly because the series isn’t even close to being finished and I don’t want to become addicted and have to wait for the next couple books!
4. Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell – This is definitely a case of an overhyped book. I read and loved Fangirl but I’m just not sure about Eleanor and Park. I think I’ll like it but I’m afraid I won’t.
5. Legend by Marie Lu – I was obsessed with the dystopian trend for a while but after having a few bad experiences I decided to put off reading any more dystopian books for a while. Legend was one of those books that got pushed aside and now I just don’t know if I want to check it out.
6. Breakable by Tammara Webber – I loved Easy but the reviews I’ve read for Breakable have not been that great. I’m kind of thinking about just leaving things where they left off with Easy.
7. The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen – I’ve seen some really mixed reviews for this book and while the story appeals to me, these reviews are from some trusted blogger friends of mine. I’ve just decided to put this one off for now.
8. This Star Won’t Go Out: The Life and Words of Esther Grace Earl – I read the introduction to this while I was at the store and pretty much started crying. I know that I need to be in the right mood to read this one and I just haven’t been in that mood yet.
9. Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children & Hollow City (Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children #1 & 2) by Ransom Riggs – This book has been pushed on me by so many people and yet I still haven’t read it. One, I think it will creep me out. Two, it’s just one of those books I’m afraid of not liking.
10. The Here and Now by Ann Brashares – I adored Ann Brashares’ Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series and I’m afraid I won’t like The Here and Now since it’s such a branch out for Ann Brashares.

#1- I can’t bring myself to read that one either.
#2- I loved Shatter Me, but the last one kinda ruined the series for me.
#3- YOU MUST READ THIS. No chance you will hate them. They are epic.
#4- I’ve only read Attachments by Rainbow and haven’t read any others for the same reasons as you! I’m afraid of the hype and not meeting my expectations!
#5- I was a huge fan of Legend, even pre-ordered Prodigy, but haven’t read that one yet! Def a really good dystopian!
#6- I didn’t like Easy, so am scared to reach for another one of her books.
#7- I tried to get this at BEA, but failed. I’ve heard good things though!

Wow! I have actually read 5 of these books. The ones I read were TFIOS, Miss Peregrine’s, The Here and Now, This Star Won’t Go Out, and Eleanor and Park! I would highly recommend all of them except for The Here and Now. I also don’t like reading too hyped up books. I think it makes me give the book way too high expectations and they fall flat. I also have read Shatter Me and haven’t continued the series. I am not sure I will ever read Hollow City. I got it out of the library once but I just wasn’t interested in it. Great post! 🙂
I should have put Breakable on my list, too. I loved Easy – one of my favorite books ever, but I’m scared to read this one. I think because I bought it, I am going to force myself to try it.
I totally understand the hype issue. That’s my worry about The Fault in our Stars. I took it off my TBR list for that reason.
I want to try the Throne of Glass series once all the books are out. If I’m even still interested by that point!
If anything – I highly recommend trying E&P. It’s definitely different than Fangirl, but in a good way. It’s wonderful.
My TTT
I’ve been putting off Throne of Glass but mostly just because I haven’t gotten my hands on the sequels yet. Otherwise, I’m thrilled to read them because I love fantasy.
I have been putting off Eleanor & Park because of the hype even though I have in on my Kindle PC. If it’s made into a movie (as rumors have stated,) I’ll probably get it over with then.
I don’t know much about The Queen of the Tearling but I heard that it’s being adapted into a film starring Emma Watson. (Don’t quote me on that!)
I read Miss Peregrine’s and Hollow City and really enjoyed them but I went into them thinking they were going to be really creepy and they weren’t. Miss Peregrine’s did start out with the illusion of creepiness but it ended up being more like a black and white history film, in my opinion.
If it makes you feel any better I didn’t LOVE Eleanor & Park. I liked it but didn’t LOVE it 🙂

*The Fault In Our Stars – I skipped this because the ending got ruined for me and I just wasn’t feeling it any more. I’ll still watch the movie, but the book lost its appeal, which is a shame
*Throne of Glass – Want to read them so bad, but I’m holding off for the same reason you are. Also, I have the first book in PB and I hate when my series don’t match format so it’s an even longer wait for me
*Eleanor and Park – I’ll read it one day. One day.
*Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – I read it and it was okay. I’m debating about giving the second book a chance, but who knows if I will or lot. Pictures were quite interesting though
My Top Ten Tuesday: To Read or Not To Read
Throne of Glass made my TTT, too. I’m just not sure I will love the book. I read and loved TFIOS, but it isn’t a favorite book of mine, and it isn’t really a book I think about much.
I just read Breakable not too long ago, and I liked it. It’s really the same story told from Lucas’s POV, except you also get to learn about Lucas’s life before college. It’s good, but not amazing. But I am glad that I read it.
I can’t recommend Eleanor & Park enough, though.
I’m with you on Eleanor and Park! Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is great though!
I read and absolutely adored Fangirl, and I think it is a lot better than Eleanor & Park. It’s not that E&P was a bad book–it certainly is not, by any means–but I just found it hard to relate to, and ultimately overhyped.
As for TFIOS, I think it’s one of the few instances (for me, at least) in which the movie was better than the book. It’s a sweet story with good characters, but I didn’t think it was as amazing as lots of people say it is.
I’m not sure if I want to read The Casual Vacancy…I don’t want my mental image of JK Rowling to be apart from Harry Potter!

I haven’t read Eelanor & Park for the exact same reason you mentioned. I loved Fangirl but I’m nervous about her other books. Same with The Queen of the Tearling. The mixed reviews from trusted bloggers has me unsure. This Star Won’t Go Out had me crying in the intro, too, but I was surprised to find how bright and celebratory it was of Esther’s life and work to help others. The Here and Now was very disappointing. I did just read Miss Peregrine’s and wasn’t creeped out at all. I was surprised as I thought it was horror, but I really loved the story! Great list, Katie!
Okay so I definitely recommend TFIOS though I took ages to read it because I was scared of crying. As well as that, I have Shatter Me on my list because I’ve not heard very good things about the series as a whole, and constant strike-throughs in books irritate me.

Legend is actually really good, it’s better than most dystopian books in my opinion. And the characters are great!
Miss Peregrine’s actually wasn’t nearly as creepy as the cover suggests, which to me was a letdown, but it’s not a bad book. It’s not very creepy, just the photos.
Throne of Glass was one of those books that I enjoyed but had some problems with. It’s good and I’ll continue with the series but there were a few things I will probably still nit-pick on, worth the read though if you enjoy fantasy.
#2: I think the series got better and better each book, and both Unravel Me and Ignite Me are amazing! I think the love triangle is handled well, too 🙂
#3: I enjoyed Throne of Glass, although it wasn’t a favorite for me.
#4: I DNF’ed Eleanor and Park, but I’m definitely one of the few. I also didn’t really like Fangirl, though, so you might enjoy Eleanor and Park a lot more!
I agree with #9… those books seem creepy but everyone seems to love them.
I could never read THIS STAR WON’T GO OUT because I’ll probably cry forever. I literally put my hands to my head when I saw the topic of your graphic because of THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, UNRAVEL ME, and THRONE OF GLASS. Despite the tears, THE FAULT IN OUR STARS is a really, really good book. I love the Shatter Me series. And oh my gosh, I love the Throne of Glass series and you must read them! And ELEANOR & PARK! I looove that book! MISS PEREGRINE was okay–totally not what I was expecting. I haven’t read LEGEND either!
I really enjoyed Throne of Glass and Legend. They were fast-paced and action-packed 🙂 I share the same feelings as you for Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children. I’m afraid of getting creeped out 🙁
I have had Throne of Glass and the second one sat in my TBR pile for months but haven’t bothered with them much. I started to read Throne of Glass as I was going into a book slump and haven’t been able to pick it back up since!
However I did love TFIOS but I totally agree with you in regards to Eleanor & Park.

I want to read The Here and Now! I haven’t read any of the Traveling Pants books… but I did read My Name Is Memory, which I absolutely loved. It’s different from the Pants books (it deals with reincarnation).
Ohh I feel the same way about Breakable. I bought a copy shortly after the release, but something was holding me back from reading it straight away. Then I started noticing all the bad reviews. I’m absolutely terrified of reading it now. What if it changes my mind about Easy and Lucas? Easy is one of the few NA books I absolutely adore, and I’m so scared it’ll ruin my positive memories.
I’ve also got a copy of Throne of Glass, but that one I’m really looking forward to trying. The downside is all the hype has bumped my expectations through the roof!
Oooh, you have a really intriguing list. I’m also kind of turned off of Eleanor & Park, even though I absolutely ADORED Fangirl and Attachments. Weird how that happens. If you want a perfectly mediocre review of Throne of Glass, I’ve got one on my blog. I didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. It was just very meh. (However, I will admit that Throne of Glass really sold me, and I became a fan after reading the second book. Funny to think that I almost didn’t read it since I felt so neutral about the first. C’est la vie!)
Ugh, I haven’t read Fault in Our Stars because I’m not ready to cry my eyes out, I’m still not.

I took forever to read TFiOS and then I didn’t really like it. Kind of “meh” and I honestly don’t see the hype. So I don’t blame you there. Howeverrrr, throne of glass. you need to read it! they’re amazing and epic.
A few of these are on my list too! I had to read TFIOS for school too, or I never ever would have read it. I was one of the few who wasn’t a fan. It just really wasn’t my kind of book.
Based off of my observations as your blog follower, I think you’ll really like Unravel Me, Ignite Me AND Throne of Glass. Although you did make a point with ToG about how not all the books of the series are out. Personally, having read the first and second book, I’m trying to space out the novellas until the third one is out. Overall, the pain is bearable >..< LOL!!!

Miss Peregrine is weird. I own the first one and made it about 10% of the way through before I gave up (reading on Kindle). I kept it, though. I read about two pages of TFIOS in the library before returning it. I want to see the movie, though, but only because I like Shailene Woodley.

personally i would not read the fault in our stars because it is extremely predictable and even if you haven’t already heard what happens you find out pretty quickly.

1. The Fault In Our Stars by John Green – Yeah, you need to read it. TBH I didn’t cry except at one part.
2. Unravel Me & Ignite Me (Shatter Me #2 & #3) by Tahereh Mafi – So you need to keep in mind that Juliette might not be a reliable narrator and that she is your only source of story. First person present. You only see from her perspective so go on her journey and if you keep that in mind, you’ll love it.
3. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas – GAH! I’m one of the very few who didn’t like this book (?!). I couldn’t finish it because I was annoyed with the MC. I just don’t get it.
4. Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell – I’m in the same boat. Own it. Haven’t read it.
5. Legend by Marie Lu – Same boat. Own it. Haven’t read it (though I tried to start it but just like you I wasn’t in the mood for another dystopian right then).
6. Breakable by Tammara Webber – I don’t even know this one.
7. The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen – I haven’t read the reviews, but it’s somewhere on my TBR list.

9. Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children & Hollow City (Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children #1 & 2) by Ransom Riggs –I didn’t even make it through the first one. I wasn’t in the mood and it didn’t grab me to make me want to keep reading. I know I may be in the minority on this.
10. The Here and Now by Ann Brashares – Did you read the last book in the series? I don’t think this one is SO different from her other books after reading that last one. I only thought this book was good if there was a sequel (which it looks like there won’t be). The book probably won’t satisfy you because there’s not much resolution.
